Exoplanet Transits

In 1992 the first planet orbiting a star other than our Sun was discovered. Today, we know of over 6,000 such exoplanets. Amateurs such as myself are helping to refine the orbits of these planets, as well as confirming new candidates. Starting in 2025, I have begun using our observatory to contribute to this scientific endeavor by measuring transits: the dimming caused by exoplanets orbits blocking some of their star’s light.

You can learn more about exoplanets, what transit curves are and how the data was collected and analyzed from the following briefing, which I presented at the Nightfall Imaging Conference on October 17, 2025.
